Aquamarine History and Aquamarine Symbolism
Aquamarine has long been a symbol of love, good luck, health, and youth. Aquamarine engagement rings have long been popular because of the romantic symbolism attributed to aquamarine, and for the calming beauty of aquamarine gemstones. Aquamarine gems have been highly valued since ancient classical times, and aquamarine amulets were highly valued by ancient sailors as a symbol of protection and good luck.
Aquamarine has a Mohs Hardness of 7.5 to 8 (diamond is the hardest at 10), which gives it excellent wearability, making an aquamarine engagement ring a good choice. Because aquamarine gems form in prismatic crystals in nature, they are often cut into square or rectangular shapes to save as much weight as possible from the original rough aquamarine gemstone crystal. Because aquamarine gems are typically of high clarity, you can expect an engagement ring set with an aquamarine to have a completely eye-clean and brilliant stone.
Aquamarine Grades and Aquamarine Grading
There is not a standardized system for grading aquamarine as there is for diamonds. This means that you will find grading of aquamarines which varies widely among jewelers and throughout the internet. For aquamarine and all colored gemstones, in order to communicate aquamarine quality, some gem vendors and gemological laboratories use letter grades, some use number grades, and some use a system similar to the GIA diamond grading system.
When comparing aquamarine engagement rings, you will find that the criteria for grading aquamarine gem stones and other colored gems does not correspond to anything you can use for exact aquamarine quality comparison between different companies.
As we are GIA graduate gemologists, we use GIA gemstone grading criteria for grading aquamarine and all colored stones. According to the GIA colored stone grading system, our aquamarine engagement rings all feature TYPE I - VVS to VS clarity, virtually inclusion free aquamarine, with some minor inclusions under 10x microscope magnification which can NOT be seen with the naked eye.
The value of a aquamarine is determined by the size, cut, shape, and intensity of the color. The majority of aquamarine gems are heat treated while still a rough crystal at very high temperatures. This is done before the gem is cut and faceted to permanently enhance the color and clarity of the aquamarine stone. As American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) members, we guarantee our aquamarine to be as described, and you are assured of the quality and value of the aquamarine engagement ring stones in our rings.
Aquamarine Engagement Ring Cleaning and Care
Normal - aquamarines do not require any special care, making it easy to preserve and enjoy their beauty for a lifetime. To keep your engagement ring aquamarine looking as clean as the first day you received it, you can clean your ring in an ultrasonic cleaner, or with a jewelry steamer.
